Nice to know where you are! You will find Winthontlaan 1 on Kanaleneiland in the Merwede area. Where does the name Kanaleneiland come from?

It is actually quite simple! Kanaleneiland is named after its location between three canals, writes newspaper Trouw. If you look at the map of Utrecht, you will see that Kanaleneiland is indeed a kind of 'island' between the Merwedekanaal, the Amsterdam-Rijnkanaal and the Leidsche Rijn. If you look closely, you see that the Merwedekanaal and the Amsterdam-Rijnkanaal come together at Westraven and flow around Kanaleneiland on both sides. The Leidsche Rijn canal separates Kanaleneiland from Oog in Al and makes Kanaleneiland a real island, surrounded by three different bodies of water.

Another fun fact: Kanaleneiland has another nickname. During a certain period many rose bushes were planted in the district. Nowadays, there are no more roses to be found, but the district still goes by its nickname 'the rose island'.
